The prospect of another miserable British summer has prompted a rush of holidaymakers to say enough’s enough and book an overseas break to sunnier climes.

Only last week, the Met Office said the current unsettled weather is set to continue into July, and offered little hope with its prediction that, in all likelihood, we are in for another cooler-than-average summer. In recent years Britons have veered away from the traditional booking rush in January and February, preferring to wait until the last minute to grab a bargain. The gloomy forecast has spurred a number of people into booking an overseas holiday or at least look into the best deals on flights, accommodation and airport transfers.

Traditional Mediterranean destinations are proving particularly popular, with Tenerife, Lanzarote and the Balearics receiving the most interest, along with the Algarve and Orlando, according to a holiday website. Lowcostholidays.com said searches for summer packages rose by 22% last week compared with the previous week. Bookings for Majorca were up 15% on the same week last year, while sales of trips to Malta have risen by 30%. Dubrovnik has seen the biggest surge in popularity, with bookings up by 150% on last year, but this could have something to do with its exposure in Games of Thrones as scenes from the hit TV series were filmed in the Croatian city.
